GIG1005 : Social Engagement Course - Phase One -

Assalamualaikum and hi everyone. It is has been a while since I'm updating my blog. So for today, I would like to share about a course that I enrolled during this second semester for my degree in University Malaya.

Social Engagement (GIG1005) is a university course that has been introduced for first-year undergraduate students. This course required the students to prepare an event that will benefits to the society as well as to make the students engaged with people.

My department which is Information Systems held our first meeting for Social Engagement course with all my coursemates and our advisor, Dr. Suraya Hamid. In the meeting, we were divided into several departments such as Human Resources, Media and others. I had been selected to join the Public Relation department. During our first meeting, we did a little ice-breaking session just to know each of the members and had a short discussion about our department's task. We also brainstormed a few programs that we can do for the course.



A few weeks later, after a lot of discussion and selection, we decided to organize a community project named ' Touch of the Future' which the project will be targeting a collaboration with primary school students from the aboriginal tribe or Orang Asli. The kids will be benefited with STEM-based bits of knowledge and new experiences through our project. My department's task was to contact Orang Asli's schools and NGOs to collaborate with. We managed to find our spot in SK Asli Bukit Lanjan and invited the primary students to participate in our project.

A lot of programmes and mini-preparation events were has been organized before the event day such as fundraising activities, module preparation workshop, and rehearsal for the main event.

Basically, our project has begun to start its progress by holding our fundraising activities which were selling various foods and holding a movie night. Unexpectedly, we managed to surpass our targeted fund which made us so pleased. All the funds that had been raised from the activities will be used for the project.

The next event was the module preparation workshop which were held to make sure the instructors and facilitators will be well prepared for the main event. I have been chosen as one of the instructors for the ICT module which is Microsoft Powerpoint Video. This experience not just behalf for the kids, but it is also a new knowledge for me to know that we can make various tasks using the Powerpoint.

The preparation phase taught me a lot on how to be well prepared in organizing a big project especially the one that engaged with the society since this whole experience can't be gained easily without involving myself into it.
